About Alberta Downs

Alberta Downs is a state of the art thoroughbred, quarter horse and harness racing entertainment center located at Lacombe, Alberta, Canada. We have over 50 years experience in the horse racing industry, and are the only 1 Mile dirt track and 7/8 Turf track in western Canada.​
  • 1 mile all weather dirt track, Base: packed clay
  • Length of the stretch: 1320 feet (440 yards), Finish to first turn 240 feet
  • ​Chutes 500 yards or 1 mile & 1/4  and 6 furlong or 6 & 1/2 furlongs
  • Width of the stretch: 90 feet, Width of backstretch: 80 feet

About the Founder - Robert O. Allen

Robert Allen has a 50 year history in the horse racing & entertainment industry. He owned and operated Happy Valley Recreations in Calgary Alberta. Happy Valley featured an 18 hole golf course, large amusement area with Olympic size indoor swimming pool and a 1000 stall RV & tenting park. Happy Valley Recreations was sold in 1979 for a housing development. Alberta Downs constructed its first racetrack in Calgary in, in 1981 and it sold in 1998 for a housing and golf course development. In 2066 Alberta Downs commenced a new racetrack operation in Lacombe Alberta featuring a 1mile dirt track and the only turf track in western Canada. This allows us to be able to run Thoroughbred and Harness on the same card.
